As Mask Mandates Lift, Retail Workers Again Feel Vulnerable
Hi all, sharing my latest story here. I spoke with several people who work in retail in Texas and Mississippi to hear about their experiences on the job since their states repealed mask mandates. While the businesses mandate masks, it’s rarely enforced.
From the story… I hope you read it: Marilyn Reece, the lead bakery clerk at a Kroger in Batesville, Miss., started noticing more customers walking around the store without masks this month after the state mandate to wear face coverings was repealed. Kroger still requires them, but that doesn’t seem to matter.
When Ms. Reece, a 56-year-old breast-cancer survivor, sees those shoppers, she prays. “Please, please, don’t let me have to wait on them, because in my heart, I don’t want to ignore them, I don’t want to refuse them,” she said. “But then I’m thinking I don’t want to get sick and die, either. It’s not that people are bad, but you don’t know who they’ve come into contact with.”
I also wrote this story last week on Zappos’ new CEO, Kedar Deshpande, who has a tough job ahead of him in succeeding Tony Hsieh.
Hope you’re well and let me know what else you’re spotting in the vast world of retail, shopping, ecommerce, corporate intrigue, labor, scams, etc.
All best,
Sapna
